چکیده

Introduction Skeletal muscle is the body’s largest organ and is essential to many aspects of human physiology, including movement, glucose uptake and storage, thermogenesis, and total body water balance. MRI methods allow investigators to assess many aspects of muscle structure and function. A key point of focus for this abstract and presentation will be the muscle microvasculature, the proper function of which is essential to all of the activities noted. The purposes of this abstract and presentation are 1) to describe the changes to muscle microvascular structure and function that occur in obesity and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) and 2) to describe the use of BOLD MRI-based methods for studying muscle microvascular function in obesity and diabetes.

Skeletal muscle microvascular function in girls with Turner syndrome

BACKGROUND Exercise intolerance is prevalent in individuals with Turner Syndrome (TS). We recently demonstrated that girls with TS have normal aerobic but altered skeletal muscle anaerobic metabolism compared to healthy controls (HC). The purpose of this study was to compare peripheral skeletal muscle microvascular function in girls with TS to HC after exercise. We hypothesized that girls with ...

Peripheral microvascular response to muscle contraction is unaltered by early diabetes but decreases with age.

Long-term or untreated diabetes leads to micro- and macrovascular complications. However, there are few tests to evaluate microvascular function. A postcontraction blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique was exploited to measure peripheral microvascular function in diabetics and healthy controls matched with respect to age, body mass index, and physical ac...

BOLD magnetic resonance imaging of skeletal muscle.

Blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) imaging was a concept introduced in 1990 for evaluating brain activation. The method relies on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast resulting from changes in the microvascular ratio of oxyhaemoglobin (oxyHb) to deoxyhaemoglobin (deoxyHb). OxyHb is diamagnetic, whereas deoxyHb is paramagnetic, which produces a local bulk magnetic susceptibility effect and...

Biomonitoring the skeletal muscle metabolic dysfunction in knee osteoarthritis in older adults: Is Jumpstart Nutrition® Supplementation effective?

Background: This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of Jumpstart Nutrition® dietary supplement (JNDS) for enhancing the skeletal muscle metabolism and function of older adults with knee osteoarthritis (KOA) by evaluating the biomarkers of aberrant levels of serum tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-10 (IL-10), C-reactive protein (CRP), creatine kinase-muscle (CK-MM), and aldol...

Effect of Hypothermia by JZL-184 on Muscle Strength and Sensory-Motor Dysfunction in Permanent Middle Cerebral Artery Ischemia Model in Male Mice

Introduction: Currently, there is no effective and comprehensive treatment for ischemic stroke. There is strong clinical evidence for the benefits of hypothermia in neuroprotection. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine the effect of mild non-invasive hypothermia by JZL-184 on behavioral improvement in stroke rats. Methods: This study was performed on 5 groups of male mice weighing 2...
